Practice: Meditation for Overwhelm

when you're feeling stuck

Overwhelm is sticky.

As soon as I’m in it, I feel the weight of all the emotions tied to it.

Sadness, frustration, anxiety, confusion…mixed with fatigue, heaviness, and tension in the body. The experience of overwhelm permeates through mental-emotional and physical bodies.

And that’s why I usually describe it as a sticky emotion, because I notice overwhelm when it feels like there’s no spaciousness left.

If you’re in search of spaciousness, then I invite you to join me for this mindfulness of breath meditation.

Together we’ll explore breath awareness, noticing each inhale and exhale without judgment. This practice invites ease into the body and a sense of space to help release the stickiness of overwhelm from each of your layers.

As I was crafting this meditation, I revisited my journal entries from IVF. One of the most overwhelming seasons of my life.

I wrote over, and over, and over again about needing to find my own present moment presence amidst all the “what ifs”, updates from the doctor, medications, mood swings and body changes.

I crafted this meditation for that version of me, in hopes it can also serve you.

That you’ll come back to the breath as an anchor for presence in the present.

I also need to say a special thank you to Dora Kamau and Lori Scott for being part of the creation process! This meditation was created as part of my current mindfulness meditation training - Into the Depths - led by Dora. And Lori was my first accountability buddy. Thank you both for your guidance and feedback.
